Free Legal Services Unit Homepage

Welcome to the Free Legal Services Unit THE UNIT established by the Faculty of Advocates The Free Legal Services Unit was established by the Scottish Bar to provide free legal advice and representation in deserving cases for those who cannot afford the legal help which they need, and who cannot obtain assistance from any other source. Advice and representation is provided by advocates who have volunteered to join the Faculty of Advocates Free Legal Services Panel. HOW CAN THE UNIT HELP? We can help by putting members of the public, referred by an advice agency, in touch with advocates on our panel who can: Give ADVICE - either in the form of a written opinion or verbal advice at consultation; or REPRESENT them in any Court or Tribunal in Scotland; or Provide assistance with MEDIATION FREE OF CHARGE Applications for advice or representation are considered by our Management Committee, whose decisions are final.

Faculty Appeals Unit

What services do we offer? Since 2014, Faculty Services Limited has offered a criminal appeals service provided by the Faculty Appeals Unit. Stepping out to raise funds for pro bono legal services

The Faculty of Advocates and the Law Society of Scotland will again be joint national sponsors of the Legal Walks, organised annually by the Access to Justice Foundation to raise money to fund much-needed pro bono services.

About Us

THE FREE LEGAL SERVICES UNIT The Unit receives applications for assistance through advice agencies. The Unit aims to help in cases where the applicant cannot afford to pay for the assistance sought or obtain public funding, has a meritorious case, and needs the help that counsel can provide. Applications are reviewed by one of a number of registered counsel, and the Unit then makes a decision as to whether or not to try to find a volunteer advocate to assist.

Reforming legal services regulation

The Faculty has responded to the Scottish Government's consultation on amendments to legal complaints.

Pro bono organisations should be coordinating how they provide their services

I am sorry (mea culpa) for the Latin in the title. Pro bono – short for pro bono publico – refers to something done for the public good; pro bono legal services are often provided without their recipient having to pay for them.

Review of regulation of legal services: Dean’s statement

The Dean of Faculty, Gordon Jackson, QC, has responded to an announcement by the Scottish Government of an Independent Review of the Regulation of Legal Services.
