Civil justice statistics published

NEW figures reveal that 73,640 civil cases were initiated in Scotland in 2016-17 – the lowest since current statistics began in 2008-09.

The total is down five per cent from the previous year, and represents a decrease of 44 per cent since 2008-09, when the figure stood at 131,600.

In the Court of Session in 2016-17, the number of cases fell by 48 per cent on the previous year. Sheriff court cases also decreased, by five per cent.
