Possible return of death penalty in Turkey is condemned

20 Oct

The Faculty has co-signed a statement which condemns in the strongest terms a possible reinstatement of the death penalty in Turkey.

Recent comments by the Turkish President prompted the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE) to issue a statement.

The document states that the right to life is “an inalienable attribute of human beings” and “a supreme value in the international hierarchy of human rights”.

The Faculty was joined by other UK legal bodies – the Law Society of Scotland, the Bar Council of England and Wales, the Law Society of England and Wales, the Bar of Northern Ireland and the Law Society of Northern Ireland – in being a signatory to the statement.
