Election Court hearing to be broadcast live

01 Sep

A court challenge to the election of Liberal Democrat Alistair Carmichael as MP for Orkney and Shetland will be broadcast live, it has been announced.

The Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service has reached agreement with STV for the hearing next week in the Election Court to be streamed on the internet.

Previously, it was decided that the hearing should take place in Edinburgh, rather than in the constituency, and to enable islanders to view the proceedings, Lord Carloway, the Lord Justice Clerk, granted permission for live broadcast arrangements to be put in place.

Lady Paton and Lord Matthews will sit in Court 1 of the Court of Session to hear the petition brought by a number of constituents, starting at 10:30am on Monday, 7 September.
