The Stable
The Black Stable was established in 2002 when Lee-Anne Black took over as clerk of what
had previously been the Carvel Stable. Since then, the Stable has grown in numbers and
reputation establishing itself, in particular, at the forefront of the Criminal Bar.
As well as containing numerous Counsel with an expertise in most aspects of criminal law,
the Stable also includes several members highly regarded at the Civil Bar, offering a wealth
of experience in various areas such as personal injury, commercial law, employment law and health
and safety matters.
The Stable currently contains 44 members including 9 Senior Counsel, and the clerking team consists
of Lee-Anne and her two deputies, Stevie Burns and Sara Mauriello. The clerks offer a consistently
efficient and professional service, providing an invaluable link between Counsel and instructing agents.
The Stable members have extensive experience in the Sheriff Court, the Court of Session - both Inner
and Outer Houses -, the High Court of Justiciary, the Criminal Appeal Court, the House of Lords and the
Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. Members have also been involved in Fatal Accident Inquiries,
Health and Safety Prosecutions, Childrens Referrals, Confiscation Proceedings and Employment Tribunals,
and the clerking team would be happy to provide guidance as to the most appropriate Counsel for any
particular instruction.
As well as containing Counsel who have conducted high profile cases throughout Scotland, the Stable
is particularly strong with regards to Criminal Appeals, with a number of Counsel being involved in
landmark cases concerning devolution issues and Human Rights matters.
