Manderson Stable
About us
Elizabeth Manderson

The Manderson Stable, as one of Scotland's largest and longest established stables, is highly regarded as a source of experienced Counsel practising across a breadth of specialisms within Scottish, UK and European Law. It is committed to the provision of advice and representation of the highest quality and to the delivery of excellence in response to the needs of all clients.

The Stable
With a membership of 38 Advocates, comprising 6 Silks and 32 Junior Counsel, this stable offers extensive knowledge, experience and specialist expertise. Its membership includes Counsel pre-eminent in their specialisms, particularly in the fields of commercial law, construction law, tax, media and broadcasting and medical negligence. Members of the stable regularly appear in court at all levels, including the Judicial Committees of the Privy Council and the House of Lords, before all tribunals and in arbitrations. Instructions appointing arbiters and mediators are accepted. In addition, the stable membership includes Advocates who act as Standing Counsel to various government departments, as well as those who have been, or currently act as, Crown Counsel. A number of the stable's Counsel are also members of the Bar of England and Wales.

Type of work undertaken
While the range of practices within the Stable is such that, collectively, its members are active in all areas of the law, this stable has a strong core expertise in personal injury, medical negligence, commercial law, company law, property matters, planning, tax, immigration, media and broadcasting law, including defamation, family law and human rights law. Members of the Stable have been instructed in several high profile cases and inquiries in recent years. The stable regularly receives instructions from leading law firms acting on behalf of commercial institutions, public bodies, insurances companies and trade unions. In addition, the stable offers highly regarded expertise in the field of criminal defence work, both at trial and on appeal, and in heath and safety prosecutions.

Clerking Services
Elizabeth Manderson is one of the most experienced of Clerks, having been in post as Senior Clerk of this Stable since 1990. She is assisted by her deputies, Anne Torrie, Dawn Teitsma and Matthew Tudor. Together, they are dedicated to delivering a consistently effective and professional service. Their aim is to facilitate efficient access to the Scottish bar, and to see to it that instructions receive prompt and reliable attention.

The team of Clerks is happy to advise on the Counsel best suited to the client's needs and on any Counsel's availability. They will offer advice on the appropriate level of fees which may be negotiated in advance. Estimates of fees, or more detailed feeing arrangements, can also be provided.

The Stable accepts instructions not only from Solicitors, but also, through Direct Professional Access, from other accredited bodies.
