Course Summary

OBJECTIVES A seminar to examine the changing face of Trade Unions and to advise on the positive influence which Trade Unions have on employee rights.

This seminar will equip those who advise employees with the knowledge and understanding to explain the benefits which employees can gain from joining a Trade Union and to indicate how employees can most effectively use their trade union.

Topics covered will include:

- The role of Trade Unions in developing the economy by developing better

jobs and services

- The role of Trade Unions in promoting good employment and jobs where

employees have fair employment rights

Trade Unions and the Safeguards they offer to Workers in the 21st Century

The Role of Trade Unions and Challenges They Face

- LEAN

- Sickness Absence Management

- Trade Unions in the anti-union, anti-worker employment relations context

PARTICIPANTS This seminar will be of interest to trade union members and representatives, advice workers and solicitors who advise employees, employees or trade unions, policy makers, employment policy researchers, unions and employees.

Speakers: Ian Tasker - Assistance Secretary of the STUC; Rory McPherson - Head of Thompsons Employment Rights Unit;

Professor Phil Taylor - Professor of Work and Employment Studies at Strathclyde University
