Biography

Barney has a busy and varied practice with a particular focus on reparation, regulatory and criminal law.

He frequently appears in the Court of Session, High Court of Justiciary (at first instance and appeal) and in the Sheriff Courts across Scotland.In his civil practice Barney is primarily instructed in litigation relating to personal injury and professional negligence, for pursuers and defenders. He is regularly instructed in fatal claims, including those relating to industrial disease and clinical negligence. In 2015, he appeared for the defender at proof in an action for damages for
malicious falsehood involving two elected politicians.In his criminal and regulatory practice, Barney is regularly instructed in matters of complexity, including cases relating to environmental, fisheries protection, food hygiene, terrorism, road traffic and proceeds of crime legislation. He is experienced in conducting trials and has appeared in a complex multiple-party fatal accident enquiry.
